The Fearless Girl

This week for the first time, I was able to get a couple of snaps of the “The Fearless Girl” by Kristen Visbal. The installation is literally only a couple of blocks from my home, but every time I have stopped by, it had been completely mobbed with tourists. Tuesday’s snow storm provided a nice break in the usual flow of visitors and I was able to get a couple of images. Initially the installation was only supposed to be there for a week. The permit was subsequently extended to a month. Now Public Advocate Letitia James is lobbying to make the installation permanent.

Like everything these days, there is controversy surrounding the piece. I have to admit that when I initially read about it on the morning of International Women’s Day, I was a little bit dismayed to see who had sponsored it, and they had chosen to include their name on the plaque. I thought it was a pretty low brow PR move. Anyway, after seeing the reaction that the piece itself has garnered, as well as the dialogue that it has inspired, I relate to both sides of the argument. At the end of the day, it is a nice piece of art, and symbolizes a very important issue. A few more snaps below–

Umbrellas

Friday evening brought a brief squall to lower Manhattan just in time for the evening commute. Luckily, I was already home since my office was closed early for the long weekend. I decided to break out the 200mm and take some snaps of commuters with their umbrellas. Here are a few of my faves.

De La Weekend (1 WTC)

I had a very event filled weekend, spent with close friends and family. During the course of it all, we paid a visit to the new One World Observatory at the top of 1 WTC. The experience did not disappoint. I generally avoid tourist traps, because I don’t have the patience to wait in lines. But for a few extra $$ you can skip the line and go straight to the top. So, we went that route. I want to go back again when I am not on such a tight schedule, so that I can spend more time up there. It was a pretty clear day with great visibility. I would highly recommend the experience.

De La Weekend (Below Freezing Edition)

It felt like winter, over the weekend. I don’t believe that the temperature managed to get above freezing. It is generally pretty quiet on weekend mornings in FiDi even when the weather is nice. Add in some arctic temperatures, and it turns into a ghost town. Mostly I just wanted to post the photo of these two cuties all bundled up on Lola’s Saturday morning walk.

We were at a House of VANS event, and saw a new take on the now-ubiquitous party photo booth. Instead of a static image (or even a phhhoto style .gif), there was an array of cameras setup for a matrix style gif. The outfit manning the booth was A-1 Array. The result is below–
