De La Weekend: NYC Marathon Edition

jacob-breinholt-nyc2016-0833

Sunday morning we had the pleasure of soaking in the energy of the NYC Marathon. Whether I’m running or watching, this race gets me every time. We posted up along the course in Brooklyn to cheer for our friends who were running (and for everyone else). The weather could not have been much better.

Catskills Fall Jaunt

Something that B and I have in common is that we like to get out of town for our b-days. For two years in a row we have seen our first snow of the season on the weekend between our b-days. This year we spent a couple of nights in West Kill, NY. It is a little town not far from Woodstock and Phoenecia. The place we stayed is on a dead end road on the back side of Hunter Mountain, called Spruceton Inn. The Inn is a cutesy (but not too cutesy) spot designed for exactly the type of weekend we were looking to have. Friday night we were able to build a fire and grill some burgs before the rain rolled in. We slept late on Saturday before hitting the Phoenicia Diner for brunch and exploring the town of Phoenicia for a bit. As we were headed back to toward the Inn Saturday afternoon, the rain turned to snow.

Saturday evening we dined at Peekamoose, which was a short drive from the Inn. Afterward, we stayed up late socializing and playing card games with some of the other guests in the Spruceton Inn canteen. Sunday morning the sun finally came out. B and I took a short hike (more of a nature walk, really) to Diamond Notch Falls before heading back to the city.

Despite the less than ideal weather, we had a really great time just relaxing and being off of the grid for a couple of days. I would definitely recommend all of the spots we stopped through. Although, be forewarned that the diner feels an awful lot like north Williamsburg. Even though we missed peak foliage, there were still plenty of colorful leaves on the trees. We may have to do it again next year.

No. 11 and New Dec(k)or

jacob-breinholt-nyc-2016-04621

This was one of those times where I got so distracted by life that I didn’t even realize it was going to be a 3 day weekend until last Friday. I wasn’t at all upset when I realized that Monday was Columbus day. Saturday I completed my 11th marathon. My post-finish photo to the left is courtesy of B. It was also my first race since I had ligament reconstruction on my ankle. Even though I felt pretty good on Sunday morning, I was definitely happy to have Monday as a bonus recovery day.

B didn’t waste any time giving me a honey-do list on Monday since I was going to be around the house all day. One of the items on the list was to hang a couple of skate decks (above) that had been stacked in the corner for several weeks now.

One additional mention-worthy-item is that the weather has officially turned fallish. Driving back from Hartford on Sunday there were a lot of leaves that had already changed colors in western Connecticut near Danbury. Monday, the high temp in NYC was still cool enough to be deemed hoodie weather. I’m pretty excited about that. The in between seasons are definitely my favorite.

Lastly: my second favorite BBC1 DJ, Phil Taggart put on a fantastic session Sunday night. I’m linking to it here (avail for 30 days, only).

Oct Playlist

This is just a random photo I recently took that is similar to many of the photos that I took in my jr high school photo class.

A few days late, but here is my October playlist–

Also loving the new Banks Album.

Indian Larry’s

I stopped by the Indian Larry’s rally in N. Williamsburg on Saturday. There were a lot of really cool custom builds. I snapped a few that I thought were the most eye catching. I’m blown away by the attention to detail that goes into some of these bikes. It is probably because I usually don’t pay attention to non-sport bikes. But I could definitely appreciate the craftsmanship that was employed on these builds.

Woes

The above photo is one of the first snaps that I took with my new cam. The reason for the poor contrast and flat color range is because I was unable to really edit the photo. While the camera is awesome, Adobe has yet to release an update that supports the 5D RAW format in Lightroom. So I can either shoot JPG (no thanks), use the super clunky Canon software to convert the files (which is what I ended up doing on the snap above [again, no thanks]). Or…. I can wait for Adobe to update their software. How long until the update will be released? Unclear. In Adobe’s support forum last month, moderators were indicating that an update for standalone Lightroom 6 and Lightroom CC would be released contiguously with the camera. That obviously did not happen. Last night I had a quick IM chat with a support rep to see if I could get any more specific information:

adobechat

So, I guess I’ll stop whining now and just continue to wait.

New Gadget

While I’m very underwhelmed with all of the new crap that Apple unveiled this month, I couldn’t be more excited about the new Canon 5D. When it was announced a few weeks ago, I pre-ordred one the same day. I love my mkiii, and the mkiv has all of the stuff that I wish the mkiii would have had. Anyway, it arrived in the mail today and I decided to do this corny little unboxing video. My daughter loves these kind of videos for some reason. She usually watches ones about lego sets or play doh. But maybe I can get her stoked about cameras if I show her this vid.

Watch me mumble to myself about my new camera below, sexy slow-jams for background music and the whole 9 yards.

Happy Autumn + September Playlist

iphonesunsetAug28

I know that autumn does not officially start until September 22. But this is Labor Day weekend, and mine actually starts today. As you can see by this crappy iPhone photo, the sun has already started to move south again. This means that kids are back in school, college FB is here again, and cooler temps are hopefully around the corner. I’ll have the pleasure of spending this holiday weekend in rural Maine (as opposed to urban Maine, hehe) for a wedding. Hoping to come home with minimal mosquito bites, and with lots of good memories.

New month= new playlist. Here is my September 2016 playlist. Safe and fun Labor Day weekend!
